Set in the 1960’s, both in Bethel and at Mt Edgecombe Boarding School, the story of the disappearance of Dove Alexie is told through the perspective of four teenagers. The use of first- person narration, told through four different voices, adds complexity to this story of loss and hopelessness.

Careful selection important.
Written in a complicated, challenging style, Unseen Companion exposes the darker side of the Alaska boarding school system and village life in the 1960s. Though it will undoubtedly spark much discussion, the book provides more questions than answers.
Mature themes make this a book appropriate for older, more sophisticated teens.
