Blueberry Shoe

Picture Storybook, Primary Blueberries, a family hike, SE Alaska
Dixon, Ann. Blueberry Shoe. Ill. by Zerbetz,Evon. Portland: Alaska Northwest Books, 1999.
A sweet story about the journey of a baby’s shoe lost on a family hike on Ptarmigan Mountain. After being a home for a vole, a toy for a fox and more it is found by surprise in the spring, now a cute container for a blueberry plant. The bright illustrations that pop from black backgrounds make for a fun search and find game as the story unfolds.
Activity: Students can reuse items for planters of their own, an old boot, a paint can, etc. Also, inference can be studied. Why did the holes in the shoe make it a better planter? How did the dirt get in the shoe?
